About the Author

From bicycle touring to backpacking, watercolour painting to clay modelling, the exploration journal captures my journey through many different interests and travel adventures.

I love to find those out of the way places that whisk you away from the concerns of everyday life. Whether this is by wading through an overgrown river or trying new paint techniques is up to you!

(3) You acknowledge that routes can change and these files are from a snapshot in time, and (4) you will follow them with due caution and awareness of your surroundings.This page has downloadable routes for:

UK – West Highland Way
UK – Pennine Way
UK – South West Coast Path
UK – Glyndwrs Way
UK – Beacons Way
UK – Windrush Way
UK – Cleveland Way
Portugal – GR50 (Peneda-Gerês National Park)

Spain – GR240 Seirra Nevada
Turkey – St Paul’s Way

A couple of other points:

  • I have provided both GPS and KML files for most of the routes. GPS doesn’t like alternative routes, so some routes are KML only. I have used an app called Maps.Me for many years to follow KML routes and pin key locations, camp spots and points of interest. As a follow-the-route tool it is excellent, as an wilderness map it is not. I like to carry an OS Map (or local equivilent) as well if possible.
  • The files only show the route, none of my personal campspots as I believe sharing those will spoil the fun of finding your own wild camping spot.
  • Some KML files show alternative routes, or other trails which cross over the main one and could be explored.
  • Due to limitations of my site, these routes are provided in zip format, so will need extracting before use.
  • The best way to download Eurovelo cycling routes is direct from their website: https://en.eurovelo.com/#routes-and-countries, these are in GPS format but can be converted to KML format online.

France

France – GR10 (GPS and KML)GPS and KML route for the GR10, the long distance traverse of the Pyrenees in France that runs from the Mediterrean to the Atlantic (592 miles). A good way to create a route is to download the KML files for the GR10 in France, the HRP and the GR11 in Spain and create your own route using all three. I tend to use Maps.Me when looking at multiple routes as you can chose which layers to show and avoid it getting too messy.* Short two day walks in the Ariege 1
* Short two day walks in the Ariege 2
* Oloron-Sainte-Marie to Bagnères-de-Luchon
France/Spain – HRP Haute Randonnée Pyrénéenne (GPS and KML)GPS and KML route for the GR11 in France and Spain, from the Mediterrean to the Atlantic (592 miles).

Spain

Spain – GR11 (GPS and KML)GPS and KML route for the GR11, the long distance traverse of the Pyrenees in Spain that runs from the Mediterrean to the Atlantic (592 miles). The GPS file is one consecutive route without the alternative sections, the KML has both.
Spain – GR240 Seirra Nevada (GPS and KML) GPS and KML route for the GR240 in Sierra Nevada national park in Spain. I haven’t actually done this route yet, I got it all ready to use and then changed my plans that year and went to Turkey instead.

Turkey

Turkey – St Paul’s Way (KML only) KML only for St Paul’s Way in Turkey, showing the main route from near Antalya to Yalvaç (310 miles), the alternative stages, and the alternative start from Beskonak.
This download is slightly different and has three files:
1. The main route with both starts and the alternative stages marked in different colours.
2. The original route provided by Ibrahim in Eğirdir
3. A POIs layer that marks water spots (blue) – though this is indicative and can change, so use it to inform your plans, not as the foundation for them
This one only has the KML file as GPS files can’t handle the route splitting into alternative sections.
Main route
* Antalya to Sütçüler
* Sütçüler to Eğirdir
* Eğirdir to Yalvaç

Portugal

RouteDescriptionAssociated blog posts
Portugal – GR50 Peneda Gerês National Park (KML only)KML route only for the GR50 in Portugal from Tourém to Ameijoeira (116 miles). It also includes two alternative sections to make it longer, the PR9 (Sete Lagoas), and GR34 (Trilho Da Serra Amarela). Both of which can be started from the GR50 and rejoin it slightly further on. This one only has the KML file as GPS files can’t handle the route splitting into alternative sections.* GR50 from Tourém to Xertelo
* Walking in Portugal: PR9 Trilho das 7 Lagoas
* GR50 from Xertelo to Gerês
* GR34 Serra Amarela trail

Please let me know if you come across any mistakes in the files, fiddling around with them takes ages and sometimes the odd error creeps in.
