About the Author

My name is Will.

Every year I research different places to go and my ‘I should go here’ list gets longer. I add it and then start thinking of the best way of getting around when there, be it cycling, backpacking or vehicular.

The Exploration Journal is my way to document my travels to these places and my development as a photographer.

2019: Year in review

Every year I do a review of what I accomplished over the year and areas I want to focus on in the coming year. My 2019 goals were to:

In 2019 I accomplished 9 of the 12 goals I set myself. This year I focused more on the creative side of things and neglected the travel. I think this is mainly due to starting work and have not having a four month summer to travel around during. 2020 will be about getting the right balance of both.

I’ve been in a race over the last few months to get everything copied over to this site from my old wordpress hosted site. The storage runs out on the 17th January, so everything needs to be moved by then, my first goal to complete will be moving across all the holidays.

Travelling

Travelling this year has been a lot more spending time with family and less visiting as many new countries as possible. I went on holiday with friends to Snowdon, visited my brothers family in York (and saw a singular puffin!) and my sister in Germany.

Art and Photography

The creative side of things was a lot better in 2019, I discovered clay modelling when visiting family in Hampshire, started watercolour painting again, and finally finished off a rework of my ‘Out of the Cave’ artwork. I also decided to practice the ink illustration style of art.

Other
  • I read 40 books.
  • I explored Warwickshire a lot more, by joining the Warwickshire Wildlife Trust and looking around their hundreds of reserves. So far I’ve only posted about Crackley Wood.
  • I moved The Exploration Journal from the .wordpress.com hosting to this website and redid the whole design!
Goals for 2020

For 2020 I’ve decided to drop digital painting as a goal, I’ll still try and do some over the year but will mostly be focusing on watercolour and ink instead. This is because I find digital art too screen intensive after working all day and so would rather do something away from the computer.
