Summer Update 2020

Summer Update 2020

It feels a bit weird to be writing a summer update with Covid-19 rampaging across the world. Normally I use these mid-year updates to tell you all where I plan to go over the summer months and what I want to see but those plans all got thrown out of the window in late March. I’ll run through the adventurous backpacking holiday I had planned anyway as I put quite a lot of thought into where to go and what walk I wanted to do.

The adventurous holiday

The plan was to fly to Granada and walk the GR240 through Sierra Nevada (in Spain!). It’s a relatively new walk that first opened in 2007 and links many of the small villages together. My brother and I had planned to go in Early May and thought it was the best option to get good weather that early in the year.

It’s a circular route that runs along the north and south side of the mountain range. My rough plan was to fly in to Granada, walk the Northern side and then catch a bus back from Abla at the end. There are footpaths going up to the peaks and also along many of the ridgelines so whilst the GR240 would have formed the backbone of the walk, we would have also climbed up and done higher sections when suitable.

We only had about two weeks to get there, walk and get back again so could only have done one half of the walk and catching the bus from Abla was the easiest way back I could find. But since we couldn’t do it I can plan a future holiday to do the full 270km circuit.

The other Summer 2020 plans

  • Spend roughly 10 days in Germany visiting family friends.
  • A few long weekends visiting my brother’s family in York and then my sister’s family in Dusseldorf.
  • Go camping in the Peaks and potentially the Lake District for a few weekends.
  • Go kayaking on the Wye with my housemates/Warwick friends.

I decided to travel home to Cornwall as soon as I got the ‘don’t come in!’ email from work and spent a few days at home before the lockdown started. At that point it was clear that none of my holiday plans were going to happen so I decided make the most of this unexpected time at home and explore the quiet lanes around South Devon and Cornwall.
